Out & about

Outdoor vacations in the mountains of South Tyrol. All year round.

To call South Tyrol's mountains an ‘adventure playground’ would deny them justice. The Alpine terrain in the Meran and Environs holiday area is breath-taking and just waiting to be explored. Mountain-climbing, hiking and mountain biking … exploring up at high altitudes or down in the valley. Whether it’s sporty challenges or leisurely recreation, one cannot but wish to immerse oneself in such magnificent wide-open spaces!

When guests ask where they might find the most beautiful spots in South Tyrol, I tell them: “just follow me”.

Hiking with your host

The locals know South Tyrol’s most attractive beauty spots. If you allow a local to show you around, there’s much more to discover. Jakob Pichler organises weekly excursions to explore South Tyrol’s natural wonders. These include the panoramic mountain refuges, hiking through pine forests and up to the summits. Such destinations are not always easy to pinpoint on a map, so it’s better to let an experienced guide help you. Discover the natural and cultural treasures of South Tyrol. ‘Local knowledge’ you can rely on.

Cycling adventures
from March to November

The weather conditions in Schenna/Scena permit cycling from March to November, making it a cycling paradise. Take on the renowned mountain passes, ride along solitary forest trails, or retrace mountain tracks up to the summits. Down in the valley the leisurely cycle routes lead to cultural points of interest worth discovering.
Whether you’re on a road bike, a mountain bike, or an e-bike … the cycle track network around Schenna offers all kinds of cycling adventures amidst South Tyrol’s natural splendours.

Afterwards, there is something else to look forward to. The Erzherzog Johann Hotel’s spa-wellness centre offers all you need to soothe aching muscles. Sweat it out in a sauna or float weightlessly in our swimming pool. Which pool would you prefer? Indoor, or outdoor?

Tennis matches?
Always with us. And free of charge.

Tennis is a noble sport. Perhaps that's why we have always promoted it here at the Hotel Erzherzog Johann. Or maybe it's just because our guests have a lot of fun on our own artificial grass court right next to the hotel. In any case, our court is available to tennis fans from Easter to All Saints' Day - even after rainfall. And the best news is saved for last: you can play tennis with us for free, just make a reservation at the reception desk.

Before the hotel door, it starts.

Really starts.

The most beautiful hikes are the ones that don't require a long drive. Or better yet, no drive at all. The Erzherzog Johann is privileged in this regard, as it is located in the middle of a hiking paradise. Or in other words, a whole range of the most beautiful hikes in the Merano region start right outside our hotel door. So, no car, no traffic, no parking search, just step out of the hotel and off you go.

The only problem is that you are spoiled for choice. Head south (and because Scena has a box seat, downhill), and you will pass through apple orchards into the heart of Merano. Head northwest (still downhill, but not as far), turn onto the Waalweg and follow the flowing water. And right behind the Erzherzog Johann is the Schennaberg, which also doesn't skimp on beautiful tours: the one to Taser, for example, or up to Scena's mountain, the Ifinger. We guarantee that with this selection, there is something for everyone. For the young and young at heart, for athletes and leisurely hikers, for altitude freaks and lovers of easy trails. And even for mountaineers.

So again: Simply step out of the hotel door and into the hiking pleasure!
