Taser - Ifinger Hut - Egger - Greiter - Taser

Easily accessible from the Hotel Erzherzog Johann by bus to the valley station of the cable car Taser (bus stop Pichler). Walking to the valley station Pichler is also possible: time approximately 40 min and ascent 240 metres. Then take the cable car (round-trip ticket) to the Taser mountain station.


Description:
Starting point is the mountain station of the cable car Taser at an altitude of 1455 m. Follow the signs to the Ifinger hut (altitude 1810 m). Descend from the Ifinger hut via Egger, then head for the inn Greiter, returning to the starting point at the Taser mountain station. Return trip by cable car to the valley.


Tip:
The Ifinger hut is one of the finest in the hiking area around Scena. It has a beautiful terrace with magnificent views of the local mountain, the Picco Ivigna, and excellent food & drink. The home-made speck tastes wonderful, while host Heinrich and his family will make you feel very welcome. The large boulder outside the hut is perfect for children to climb and play on.

Taser - Streitwaider Hut - Inn Hasenegg - Pichler

Easily accessible from the Hotel Erzherzog Johann by bus to the valley station of the Taser cable car (bus stop Pichler). Walking to the Pichler valley station is also possible: time approximately 40 min and ascent 240 metres. Then take the cable car (round-trip ticket) to the Taser mountain station.

Description: 
Starting point is the mountain station of the Taser cable car (altitude 1455 m). Follow signs to the Streitweider hut (1560 m) along a forest trail. Refreshments are available. Return via the path towards Verdins, along the Scena Waalweg paths (old irrigation channel) to the inn Hasenegg and down to the Pichler valley station.

Tip: 
The Streitweider hut is a beautiful location with a large terrace. Visitors can indulge themselves with local specialties, while the bowling alley is a challenge for young and old alike.

Walk of pastures near Punta Cervina

From the Hotel Erzherzog Johann take the visitor bus to Verdins, then the cable car Verdins to Tall: from there it is a 10 min. walk to the middle station of the cable car Hirzer. Take the cable car up to Klammeben. It is also possible to drive to Saltusio (20 min) then take the cable car Hirzer up to Klammeben.

Description:
From Klammeben, hike across the alpine pastures of the Punta Cervina via the Hirzer hut (1986 m), the Tallner hut and the Hinteregger hut or the Mahd hut. From there descend via the Gompm hut to the starting point at Prenn.


Tip:
The area around Punta Cervina is one of the most beautiful hiking areas in South Tyrol and is also ideal for families. Hiking is especially recommended around June when the Alpine rose is in bloom. High summer temperatures can also be avoided at an altitude of some 2000 m.

Summit tour Picco Ivigna

From the Hotel Erzherzog take the bus to the valley station Naif and take the cable car Ifinger (round-trip) to the Pfiffinger Köpfl.

Description:
From the Pfiffinger Köpfl (1895 m) ascend past the pastures of the Waidmann hut and St. Oswald’s chapel to the mountain inn Kuhleiten. From there take a narrow path up to the great Picco Ivigna (2579 m). The last section involves a fixed-rope climb.

Tip:
Scena’s local peak, the Picco Ivigna, offers magnificent views. As this tour involves a fixed-rope climb, considerable mountain experience and a good head for heights are vital. Vertigo sufferers can enjoy the same view from the small Picco Ivigna.

Along the Maia Waalweg path to Saltusio

Description:
Point of departure is below the hotel and along the forest trail towards Castle Thurn. The trail then descends to the Maia Waalweg path (old irrigation channel) and continues to Saltusio. From here you can take the bus to Merano and then Scena. If you wish to extend your hike, walk along the river Passirio to Merano (2 additional hours approximately)

Tip:
The Maia Waalweg path is one of South Tyrol’s largest and most important irrigation channels. It is 9 km long and runs at an altitude of 470 metres from Saltusio to Merano. It is largely still in its original condition and offers a unique hiking experience at all times of the year.

Hike along the Waalweg path Scena

Description:
From the Hotel first walk to inn Pichler (valley station of the cable car Taser, also possible by bus). From there follow the Waalweg path to St. Georgen, then on to the centre of Scena and back to the Hotel.


Tip:
A hike along the Waalweg path is always an experience. It leads along largely unspoilt, open water channels through coniferous and deciduous woods, beautiful chestnut stands and orchards. There are fine views over the Merano valley up to the Ultner mountains and the Tessa group, with benches allowing you to take a rest. Water from the 8 km channel is still used to irrigate the orchards.

Summit tour on the Monte Muta

Description:
Start from the mountain station of the cable car Hochmut (1362 m) and follow the signs to the inn Mutkopf (1664 m). From there the trail now follows the route to the summit of the Monte Muta (2291 m). Return the same way.

Tip:
The peak of Monte Muta rewards climbers with beautiful views over the Burggrafenamt, the Adife valley and the Venosta valley. The summit forms the south-eastern corner of the Tessa Group and is located in the nature park of the same name.

Along the farm trail of Verdins

Description:
From Verdins (831 m) the trail ascends to the wine shop Vallplatz (1000 m). The farm trail passes the Holzner Hof to the wine shop Zmailer Hof. From there the trial descends via St. Georgen back to the Hotel in Scena.

Tip:
The Zmailer Hof offers magnificent views over the Merano valley, down the Adige valley and up to the Venosta valley. Parts of the old farmhouse, such as the kitchen, the hallway and the beautiful frescoes at the entrance are listed for conservation. Delicious farmhouse cooking is available either on the sunny terrace or inside in the snug. Try the unique speck and nettle dumplings served with fresh garden salad.

From Hotel Erzherzog Johann to Merano by foot

Description:
From the Hotel Erzherzog Johann the trail leads to the Hotel Innerhofer passing the centre of Scena. From there take the right via the Wiesenweg and then along the Sticklgassl to the Maia Waalweg path. From there follow signs to Merano Centro.


Tip:
A short, easy walk that leads through Scena’s orchards. After visiting the spa town of Merano you can return by bus to the Hotel. This tour is highly recommended even if the weather is not so good.

Along the Wiesenweg around Scena

Description:
From just below the Hotel Erzherzog Johann the hike begins with a walk up to Castle Thurn. From there the trail goes via the Ifingerstrasse, then along the Wiesenweg to St. Georgen. Descend to the Kampfelkreuz and take the Goyenweg to the Hotel Walter, then via the Mitterplattweg back to the centre and on to the Hotel. Simply follow the signs of the Wiesenweg.

Tip:
A hike along the Wiesenweg is a good way to get to know Scena. The path leads past various points around Scena and is especially recommended in spring, when the orchards are in blossom.

Walk of pastures at Meran 2000

Drive to Avelengo and the parking area Falzeben or take the bus to the valley station Naif and then take the bus to Falzeben. The cable car Naif can of course also be used, with the walk starting from the mountain station Meran 2000.


Description:
From the parking area Falzeben (1610 m) the trail goes via the Zuegg, Rotwand and Kirchsteiger hut (1926 m) up to the Meraner hut (1937 m). The round trip returns via the Kreuzjöchl (1981 m), Maiser (1791 m) and Moschwald hut (1747 m) and back to Falzeben.


Tip:
This is a gentle circular hike passing several huts offering excellent food and drink. On a clear day there are wonderful views from Kreuzjöchl to the Dolomites and the Sarntal Alps.

Walk of pastures from Verano over the Auener Jöchl

Drive through the centre of Verano to the inn Grüner Baum (next to football pitch). Car parking available.

Description:
From the inn Grüner Baum (1326 m) the trail first leads past the Leadner hut (1512 m) then via the Auener Jöchl to the Stoanerne Mandln (2003 m). From here descend to the Möltner Kaser (1766 m) and then return via the inn Waldbichl to Grüner Baum.

Tip:
The Stoanerne Mandln is a legendary place where over one hundred stone figures stand in rows, with the summit cross of Schoeneck in their midst. The significance and origins of these figures remain a mystery. Theories range from a diversion for shepherds or hikers to the dark past, when this place is said to have served as a place of worship for witches. But whether the first of the Mandln (Stone Men Cairns) really originates from Celtic times is not clear – although you can feel the magical power of this spot with its tremendous views.

Grube - Stafel - Videgg - Oberkirn

From the Hotel Erzherzog Johann take the bus to Verdins (bus stop 50 m from the Hotel). From there take the cable car Verdins (round-trip ticket) to Oberkirn. From there take the chairlift to the starting point of the hike.


Description:
From Grube (1800 m) the trail ascends to Stafel (two huts serving refreshments at 1940 m). Descend to Videgg (1540 m). From there the trail returns to the starting point at the mountain station of the cable car Verdins.

Tip:
Videgg is the highest hamlet above Scena and consists of just four farmsteads and a church. It is a popular mountain village, situated at 1500 m, and offers magnificent views of the mountains of the Tessa group. Several inns offer you the opportunity to relax and spend a while on their sunny terraces.

Hike to the Felixer Weiher

From the Hotel Erzherzog Johann drive to Lana, then on to the Passo Palade past Senale - San Felice until you see a car park signposted “Parkplatz Felixer Weiher” from the main road. Total journey time by car approximately 1 hour.


Description:

From the car park (1390 m) follow signs for Felixer Weiher. Over meadows and through larch forests up to the Felixer Weiher (1605 m). Refreshments are available at the Felixer hut and the inn Waldruhe.


Tip:

A beautiful, straightforward hike over alpine meadows with spectacular flowers. Sampling the cheese “made on the hut” at the Felixer hut is highly recommended. This hike is also well suited to families.

Circular trail Plan

From the Hotel Erzherzog Johann, drive into the upper Passiria valley. Keep following signs for Passo del Rombo, then at Mosa turn right to Plan. Journey time about 1 hour.

Description:
From Plan (1622 m) there is a slight ascent to the Falschnal hut (1773 m). From there the path proceeds to the Lazinser hut (1882 m) then via Zeppichl and back to Plan.

Tip:
This hike is especially recommended in summer and autumn. Plan is a beautiful village in the upper Passiria valley. Stop for refreshments at the Lazinser hut, a farm inhabited all year round, with an adjacent small chapel.

Hike in the Martello valley to the Zufall hut

From the Hotel Erzherzog Johann drive to the Venosta valley (follow the signs to Passo Resia). At Laces turn off towards the Martello valley. Journey time is about 1 h 15 min.

Description:
From the Enzian hut (2024 m) follow path no. 36 to the old dam, built in 1891, and continue to the Zufall hut (2267 m). Return to the car park via path no. 151.


Tip:
This round trip hike involves a high-level hike at the foot of the Cevedale glacier. The Martello valley is known for its fruity and aromatic berries, especially strawberries. The location, climate and care all ensure their unique quality.

Spring hike in the Spring valley

From the Hotel Erzherzog Johann first take the MeBo expressway towards Bolzano. Take the Appiano exit and head towards Appiano - Monticolo lake. Journey time is approximately 45 minutes.

Description:
From the Monticolo lake (496 m) the trail descends through the Spring valley to lake Caldaro (215 m). From there return to the starting point by public transport or walk back along the same route.

Tip:
A hike through the Spring valley, with its very early flowers, including thousands upon thousands of snowdrops, is one of the most famous of all South Tyrol’s springtime hikes.

Hike along the Ultner farm trail

From the Hotel Erzherzog Johann drive towards Lana then up into the Ultimo valley. Park in the village of San Nicolò. Journey time is about 1 hour.

Description:
From San Nicolò the route follows the Ultner farm trail (clearly signposted as "Ultner Höfeweg"), past old farms to Santa Gertrude. Return on the other side of the valley, past the Ultner Urlärchen (ancient conifers) to San Nicolò.

Tip:
The Ultner Urlärchen are among the oldest natural monuments of South Tyrol. At least 1,000 years old, they are believed to be the oldest conifers in Europe. Silent witnesses to the first human settlements in the upper Ulten valley, they grow on the edge of a forest strip that offers protection against avalanches.

Circular trail Langfenn – Gschnofer Stall

From the Hotel Erzherzog Johann drive via Avelengo and Verano to the car park Schermoos above Meltina. Journey time is approximately 45 min.

Description:
From the car park Schermoos (1146 m) the trail first proceeds to the church St. Jakob nearby Langfenn and then to the Gschnofer Stall (1436 m). From there follow the Langfenn circular trail no. 6 back to the starting point at the car park.

Tip:
Langfenn contains a picturesque Romanesque church, built in 1250 and dedicated to St. Jakob. The hike is especially recommended in spring, summer and autumn. In spring the meadows are full of flowers and in autumn the leaves take on beautiful colours. In good weather there are fine views of the Dolomites.

Circular trail around lake Caldaro

Departure point:
From the Hotel Erzherzog Johann first take the MeBo expressway towards Bolzano. Take the Appiano exit and head towards lake Caldaro. This hike starts at the car park of the lido.

Description:
From there, go direction north until you reach inn Geier. Behind the inn, follow the small hiking trail. Take the road to the left and continue until you reach the vineyards. Turn right, continue and pass the Lake Hotel on the left until you reach Klughammer Straße. At the southern end of the road, a hiking trail leads to the southern end of the lake. Cross the road and you will find the nature adventure trail. At the end of it, turn into Kuchlweg trail and continue until you almost reach the wine road. Take the farm trail and at the right bend, cross the wine road. Follow the country trail and the small path until you reach the chapel St. Josef. Then turn right into the narrow road until you get back to your departure point.

Tip:
The southern bank of Lake Caldaro consists of a wide strip of land thick with reeds, and it is protected by the Natura 2000 project. For this reason the marshlands of Lake Caldaro are a rest and nest-building area for many rare bird species and marsh animals. Over 100 bird species have been recorded in scientific surveys.

On the Lagundo Waalweg path to Merano

Departure point:
First take the bus to Merano and from there, the bus from Parcines to Tel. The Lagundo Waalweg path (old irrigation channel) begins just below Tel on the Lagundo side.

Description:
The Lagundo Waalweg path is a 6 km long path running alongside the old irrigation channel. Flat and even almost all the way, the trail boasts incredible views over the basin of Merano and leads you through Plars, the village of Lagundo and Quarazze until you get to the Saint Magdalena Chapel and then along the Tappeiner path to Merano.

Tip:
This route is particularly beautiful in spring when the apple trees are in blossom. One very well-recommended rest stop is the restaurant Leiter am Waal, which has a wonderful terrace looking out over the irrigation channels and exceptionally good cuisine.

On the Marlengo Waalweg path to Lana

First take the bus to Merano and from there, the bus from Parcines to Tel. The Marlengo Waalweg path starts directly from Tel.

Description:
Running practically level along the irrigation canal, this route is particularly good for families. At 12 km, the Marlengo Waalweg path (old irrigation channel) is the longest of its kind in South Tyrol. From its starting point in Tel (Parcines), it leads above the villages of Forst, Marlengo and Cermes, finishing up in Lana di Sopra.

Tip:
Winding its way over rocky land, under bridges and through tunnels, the Marlengo Waalweg path in itself is one of the most impressive of its kind. There are also numerous inns along the trail to stop off for refreshments.

On the Taser mountain trail to Gsteier

Departure point:
From the Erzherzog Johann Hotel, it’s just an easy bus ride to the valley station of the cable car Taser (bus stop Pichler). You can also walk to the valley station in around 40 minutes. From there, a cable car trip takes you up to the cable car Taser mountain station (trip up only).

Description:
When you walk out from the cable car mountain station, you soon get to a short, tarred stretch of road which takes you to the restaurant Greitererhof and a path leading through a pine forest. A pleasant, well-signposted route, flat practically all the way, takes you to the mountain restaurant Gsteier.

Tip:
A little below the farm & restaurant Gsteier, you will find a middle-station with a difference. The Meran 2000 cable car only stops on request (ring the bell to let them know) and opens straight out onto a long, airy bridge connected to the cable car pylon. A unique feat of architecture indeed.

Through the "Passerschlucht"

Take the bus line to the Passiria valley - Moso, where the adventure trail begins.

Description:
Totalling around 6.5 km in length, the route starts in Moso and ends in S.Leonardo winding its way alongside the River Passirio. At the halfway point, the route snakes downwards in a zigzag trail.


Tip:
This new route is an authentic adventure trail second to none. The carefully-planned design of the route and its proximity to the water treat you to a wholly new perspective of the countryside and a unique glimpse of the natural world.

Hike to the Videgger Assen

Departure point:
From the Hotel Erzherzog Johann, take the bus to Verdins and the cable car Verdins to Talle. From there, it’s a 10-minute walk to the middle station of the cable car Monte Cervina. Once you get there, hop on the cable car, which will take you up to Klammeben. Naturally, you can also start your trip by car, which means a 20 minutes drive to Saltusio, where you take the cable car Monte Cervina to Klammeben.

Description:
From Klammeben, follow the signposts to the Stafel hut, where a narrow mountain trail takes you to Videgger Assen and a number of places to stop off for a bite to eat. The homeward trail takes you to Videgg and your return to the cable car Monte Cervina middle station.

Tip:
The meadows of the Videgger Assen are an incredible lookout point. Look out for a small alpine hut with wooden sun-loungers - an exceptionally tempting spot to just stay put for a while and enjoy a good bask in the sun.
