The Von Braunbach winery in Settequerce, near Terlaon, is some 30 minutes’ drive away. The estate was a monastery in the possession of the Bishop of Bressanone until 1200, when it was passed on to the Teutonic Order: today it is home to a first-class winery. Tyrolean sparkling wines of the highest quality are produced here alongside outstanding red and white wines. The welcoming atmosphere of the wine shop is a place to relax and sample wines along with South Tyrolean specialties.

The wine village of Caldaro can be reached from the Hotel Erzherzog Johann in about 40 minutes by car via the MeBo expressway (exit Appiano). Extending around the lake of the same name, Caldaro is one of Europe’s most beautiful wine-growing areas. Caldaro is a perfect destination at any time of year, with numerous opportunities to taste and purchase wines in its wineries. Here are some tips for you.
The Winecenter of the Winery Caldaro
The Winecenter of the winery Caldaro is located on the South Tyrolean Wine Route where, in a pleasant atmosphere, you can try and buy the products of the winery Caldaro and its partners. The winecenter is open seven days a week from 9 am to 7 pm (Sundays from 10 am to 6 pm).
The Erste + Neue winery
Prime importance is attached to respect for the grapes, terroir and climatic conditions. The wines are full-bodied, with finesse, reflecting their origins. The Erste + Neue winery aims to produce typical local wines rather than making forgettable “fashion” wines. Retail sales and tours (on appointment). The wine list of the Hotel Erzherzog Johann includes the Rosentropfen wine from the Erste + Neue. This is a dessert wine with aromatic fruit notes and a scent of roses that is sweet and light on the palate.
The Manincor wine estate
The wonderful south-facing slopes of this historic wine estate (dating back to 1608) overlook Lake Caldaro. The cellar extension, scarcely visible between the grapevines, sees tradition blended with forward-looking techniques to produce quality wines of character, using only grapes from the winery’s own vineyards in Terlano and Caldaro. Retail sales and tours (on appointment).
Termeno, located on the Wine Route, is one of the most important wine villages in South Tyrol. The village is about 50 minutes by car from the Hotel Erzherzog Johann, either via the Brenner autobahn (exit Egna) or the Wine Route (MeBo expressway, exit Appiano, then follow the Wine Route past Caldaro to Termeno). The winery of Termeno is one of the oldest and most traditional wine co-operatives in South Tyrol. It was founded in 1898 by Father Christian Schrott and today has 290 members, growing grapes on a cultivated area of some 220 hectares in the municipalities of Termeno, Egna, Montagna and Ora.
The winery was rebuilt in 2010 and is now also an architectural attraction in its own right. All the winery’s wines can be tasted and purchased in the shop. Tours possible on appointment.
Wine tip – Gewürztraminer
The beguiling character of this grape variety reveals itself as a luminous, intense straw yellow. Notes of rose petals, cinnamon, ripe tropical fruit and cloves develop in the glass. These wholesome flavours and clear spicy hints reflect the rich clayey gravels and sunny location of Söll near Tramin, the village’s highest wine-producing area. Gewürztraminer wines from the winery of Termeno are of course featured on the wine list of the Hotel Erzherzog Johann.
The village of Egnais located in the Bassa Atesina, around an hour’s drive from the Hotel Erzherzog Johann. The Enoteca Johnson & Dipoli is to be found in the medieval arcades. “I am the wine list”, says host Vincenzo De Gasperi with confidence, and it is a fact that celebrities such as Mario Adorf and wine experts from home and abroad appreciate the advice of this Master of Wine when selecting from his range of almost 300 different types.
The Enoteca is steeped in tradition, with the host personally choosing the stock year after year, and combines a stylish restaurant, a wine bar and a wholesale outlet. The restaurant has but a few tables, with a small handwritten menu offering exquisite dishes from both Mediterranean and regional cuisines. The host Enzo will recommend an appropriate wine. A stop at Johnson & Dipoli is a must when touring along the famous Wine Route through the south of South Tyrol. The excellent food and wines are certainly not cheap, but are well worth the outlay.
After your visit we would recommend a walk through the beautiful arcades of Egna. These include the building where Andreas Hofer was held captive before being transported to Mantova.
Castel Rametz is about an hour on foot and some 15 minutes by car from the Hotel Erzherzog Johann. A wine estate, it stands on a moraine hill with well-drained soil, whose location in the basin of Merano offers ideal conditions for wine growing. This special situation enables the carefully tended vineyards with their guyot vine training to produce exceptionally high-quality grapes, which are then made into outstanding wines using the latest cellaring technology.
Next to the winery is a small wine museum with four rooms displaying implements used for viticulture in former times. The exhibits, including some now otherwise forgotten, were lovingly collected over several decades and feature tools used for soil working, harvesting and transport as well as pest control devices. There are also tools for grain cultivation and processing.
The wine museum and cellar tour, including a guided wine-tasting, takes place daily from Monday to Friday at 4.30 pm, starting from the wine shop.
The Merano and Burggräfler wineries merged as of 1 January 2010. The Burggräfler winery is now the largest cellar in the Burggrafenamt area, drawing on mini- and micro-vineyards situated on sunny slopes in Lagundo, Tirolo, Caines, Rifiano, Scena, Marlegno, Cermes and Lana. The finest wines are produced from the grape varieties that thrive in Meran, such as Vernatsch, Weissburgunder (Pinot Bianco), Chardonnay, Müller Thurgau, Ruländer (Pinot Grigio), Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Goldmuskateller, etc. Wines from both wineries are now available at both locations, in Marlengo and in Merano. Alois Lageder wines are known far beyond the confines of South Tyrol. Magrè sulla Strada del Vino, the location of the Alois Lageder winery, is located about an hour’s drive from the Hotel Erzherzog Johann. The business philosophy of Alois Lageder combines traditional values with a view to the future, as well as the theory and practice of a vision. The winery and vineyards reflect this, with the love of nature and far-sightedness brought to life in authentic wines that are the result of a holistic approach to sustainable trade based on a respect for nature, appreciation of the locality and responsibility towards future generations. Tòr Löwengang has been owned by the family since 1934, combining the highest environmental and technological standards with a respect for the surrounding nature.
The historic Casòn Hirschprunn, dating from the 13th century has been carefully rebuilt and updated since its acquisition by Alois Lageder in 1991. Work in the vineyards is governed by the rhythms and cycles of nature, with organic wines produced in an environmentally-friendly way for many years now with the entire cultivation process converted to biodynamic methods since 2004. The long-term goal is to enhance the biological balance and vitality of the vines and further improve the quality of the grapes.
The Vineria Paradeis is the Alois Lageder wine shop, located directly on the old village square. Contemporary architecture is enclosed in historic walls, offering a place to linger and enjoy either a quick espresso or an extensive tasting session. Here you will learn about the world and wines of Alois Lageder, enjoy good food or take a seat by the fireplace with a book from the bookshelf, simply letting time pass by with a glass of good wine. During the warmer months the scents of lemon and orange, jasmine and pomegranate pervade the idyllic cobbled courtyard.
Alois Lageder wines of course feature on the wine list of the Hotel Erzherzog Johann. Here are the two Alois Lageder wines that we serve:
beautiful fruit, typical tropical notes of banana, mango, pineapple; full-bodied, very soft, elegant and minerally on the palate, dry
complex nose, fruity, blackcurrant, slightly sweet pepper, spicy, vanilla, caramel, full bodied, dry
