Departure point:
From the Hotel Erzherzog Johann drive towards Lana then up into the Ulten valley. Park in the village of St. Nikolaus. Journey time: 1 hour.

Description:
From St. Nicholas the route follows the Ultner Höfeweg trail (clearly signposted), past old farms to St. Gertraud. Return on the other side of the valley, past the Ultner Urlärchen (ancient conifers) to St. Nikolaus.

Tip:
The Ultner Urlärchen are among the oldest natural monuments of South Tyrol. At least 1,000 years old, they are believed to be the oldest conifers in Europe. Silent witnesses to the first human settlements in the upper Ulten valley, they grow on the edge of a forest strip that offers protection against avalanches.
